3S Co-sponsored Event: Contemporary Voices in Sinophone Literature Lecture Series – 6th Session
Contemporary Voices in Sinophone Literature Lecture Series – 6th Session
Writing in Adversity, Writing of Adversity: Li Zishu, Mahua Literature, and the Contemporary World

Li Zishu stands as one of the most representative voices in Mahua (Malaysian Chinese) literature, her influence resonating across Sinophone literary circles and world literature at large. From Shan Wen (Mountain Plague), with its reflections on the Malaysian Chinese community amid multi-ethnic politics, to Ye Pusa (Wild Bodhisattva), which portrays the challenges confronting women in the midst of social transformation; from the entanglement of national trauma and diasporic memory in Gaobie de Niandai (The Age of Goodbyes) to the existential conditions of ordinary lives in Liusu Di (The Worldly Place), her literary trajectory itself constitutes a chronicle of wrestling with adversity. These adversities variously concern the methodology of creation (how to write amid adversity), the thematic substance of her works (how to write about adversity itself), or the precarious position of Mahua writers within the field of Sinophone literature. This lecture and conversation will take "adversity" as its guiding theme, inviting audiences to explore with us the predicaments and perseverance of writing and literature in the contemporary Sinophone world.
