Introduction

Malaysian Chinese literature (commonly known as “Mahua literature”) occupies a marginalized position on multiple fronts. Within the Western-centric international literary space, Malaysia is regarded as peripheral. The institutional framework of modern Sinophone literature tends to privilege Mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Moreover, in Malaysia itself, only texts written in the national language, Malay, are accorded the status of national literature by state institutions. Despite these challenging circumstances, Mahua writers continue to produce creative and inspiring works that engage with the world, gradually gaining recognition across various spheres, thus demonstrating Malaysia’s significance as a vital experimental ground for Sinophone literary production.

In this lecture, Professor Chan Cheow Thia will elucidate the unique evolutionary patterns of Mahua literature, focusing on how Mahua writers have come to fully recognize their peripheral position within the global Sinophone literary space and transformed it into a driving force for aesthetic innovation. He will also highlight the historical connections between Malaysia and other Sinophone regions, exploring how Mahua writers engage in “worlding” through literature.

How should we historicize the various inter-Asian “crossings” in Mahua literary production from the 1930s to the 2000s? How have writers’ travel experiences, shifts in thought and mentality, and interactions among social groups shaped these “crossings”? These questions will be at the heart of this lecture. In this light, Malaysian Crossings emphasizes the internal plurality of the periphery and its history of transregional connections, offering an insightful account for remapping the landscape of global Sinophone literature and world literature at large.
