Centre of Taiwan Studies, SOAS, University of London

Founded in 1999, the Centre of Taiwan Studies (CTS) at SOAS University of London is recognised as one of the world’s leading academic hubs for Taiwan-focused teaching, research, and public engagement. 

The European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan, the University of Tübingen (more social-science-focused)

The ERCCT provides a platform for European and Taiwanese students at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels to engage in academic dialogue on theory, methodology and content related to specific research projects, to prepare for fieldwork in Taiwan, to assess the empirical findings brought back from the field and to assist students to get their work published by internationally renowned publishing houses. 

International Taiwan Studies Center, National Taiwan Normal University

The International Taiwan Studies Center (ITSC) was established in December 2009 as one of the initiatives taken by the College of Liberal Arts at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) to promote the internationalization of Taiwan Studies.

Vienna Center for Taiwan Studies, the University of Vienna

Since its establishment in 2009, the Vienna Centre for Taiwan Studies (VCTS) has promoted research and teaching on Taiwan through a variety of initiatives. The Vienna Taiwan Lectures provide insights into recent research on Taiwan by scholars from Taiwan, Europe, and other parts of the world. The Vienna Taiwan Film Screenings open up new perspectives on Taiwanese society and culture, past and present. Lectures and films are aimed at academic and general audiences and also form part of courses and seminars on Taiwan-related topics taught in the bachelor’s and master’s programmes in Sinology and Sinophone Societies and Cultures.

Associations

The British Association for Chinese Studies

Founded during a conference held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London in 1976, BACS has been at the forefront of developments that have seen Chinese Studies change from a small, esoteric subject to a mainstream trend at all levels education and a main source of media, business, and government interest.

European Association for Chinese Studies

The purpose of the Association is to promote and foster, by every possible means, scholarly activities related to Chinese Studies in Europe. The EACS serves not only as the scholarly representative of Chinese Studies in Europe but also as contact organisation for academic matters in this field.

The European Association of Taiwan Studies

The European Association of Taiwan Studies (EATS) is devoted to the promotion of Taiwan Studies and Research in Europe. The Association seeks to foster a community of interest among scholars and researchers based in European countries in order to facilitate academic interaction and scientific collaboration.

The mission of the Cambria Sinophone World Series is to expand and advance scholarly discussion of the Sinophone world, which refers to the Sinitic-language cultures and communities born of colonial and postcolonial histories that lie on the margins of geopolitical nation-states across the world. Chinese Literature and Thought Today

The mission of Chinese Literature and Thought Today (CLTT) is to provide the finest English translations of and fresh critical essays about contemporary Chinese literature, culture, philosophy, and intellectual history. Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies

Since 1936, the Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies (HJAS) has without interruption published outstanding original research and in-depth reviews of books about China, Japan, Korea, and Inner Asia.

International Journal of Taiwan Studies

IJTS is the first internationally collaborative, multidisciplinary, and peer-reviewed academic research journal in English dedicated to all aspects of Taiwan Studies, including social sciences, arts and humanities, and topics which are interdisciplinary in nature.

Modern Chinese Literature and Culture

This is a biannual journal featuring critical research on Chinese literature and culture, from the avant-garde to the popular, encompassing film, drama, art, performance, media history, print culture, and more. Started in 1975, the journal has become essential in its field and is today a key publication in Chinese studies.

Prism: Theory and Modern Chinese Literature

Prism: Theory and Modern Chinese Literature presents cutting-edge research on modern literary production, dissemination, and reception in China and beyond. It also publishes works that study the shaping influence of traditional literature and culture on modern and contemporary China. Prism is a new incarnation of the Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese (JMLC), founded in 1997 by the Centre for Humanities Research at Lingnan University.

Taiwan Lit and the Global Sinosphere

Taiwan Lit, launched in the summer of 2020, is an online scholarly journal focusing on studies of Taiwan literature and culture. It is published by the Center for Taiwan Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

Encyclopaedias

Encyclopedia of Taiwan Studies Online

The Encyclopedia introduces the multifaceted aspects of Taiwan’s past and present in almost 600 entries, authored by more than 300 worldwide scholars who are experts in the archaeology, history, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, political science, international relations, Indigenous studies, literature, gender studies, media studies, cinema and documentary, music, and art of Taiwan. The Encyclopedia can thus be seen as a portal to the multifaceted world of Taiwan, with its vibrant culture, important developments, and radical transformations.
